Orange Splash

1/160 sec, f/8.0, ISO 100, 100mm (162mm eqv.), tripod, flash View Original

Fairly simple setup here. Alain recently got a new flash, a Yongnuo YN-560. That's it on the right @ ~1/16. My Sunpak 622 on the left @ 1/128 power. Both covered to protect from the splashing. We made quite a mess. That's foam flooring underlay on the sides of the fish tank to defuse the light.

Splash!

Did some more splash photos. I finally got a flash (I'll talk more about it later), which makes things much easier. No longer do I need to worry about having the fastest shutter speed possible, so I can close down the aperture to get a deeper depth of field.

I think this picture is interesting because it's actually two drops colliding in mid air. The first drop makes a splash and then a drop from the splash moves up and hits the next drop coming down. There's many other, much better, examples of this on the web, but it's the first time I've caught it.

Urban Spulunking

Found a cave (a.k.a. storm drain) near my house with lots of huge icicles.

Fundy (Part 3)

One more low and high tide shot.

There was a nice cool breeze most of the time.

Most of the coast line is pretty rough.

Fundy (Part 2)

Here's some more photos of the tide. I didn't do a very good job of making sure I was standing the same place when taking the low and high photos.

The guy with the white boat below not only has to time his coming and going with the water below him, but also with the bridge (visible in the last two photos) above him.

Fundy (Part 1)

It's been pretty hot and humid here for a while, so for some relief we headed to the coast for some cool Atlantic Ocean breeze, specifically, Fundy National Park on the Bay of Fundy.

As you can see on the sign below, this area boasts the highest tides in the world. The official vertical measurement is 15 meters (50 feet).

Everyday 100 billion tonnes of water flow in and out of the Bay of Fundy... twice! That's more than the combined flow of all the freshwater rivers in the world. I took these pictures of this bridge at low and high tide and stuck them togeter. The hight of the tide varies throughout the bay, here it's only 10 meters (33 feet).

While the vertical hight is 15 meters (50 feet) the horizontal affect can expose kilometers (miles) of sea floor. In the photo below, everything gets covered in water, aside from the cliffs.

Waterfalls

I went out looking for a waterfall that I had visited years ago, but it wasn't quite how I remembered it. It was impossible to photograph unless I wanted to go for a swim, maybe when it's a little warmer. I found this one not far away. It worked out alright.

My wife liked these so I saved them for her birthday, which is today!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULIE!

Sunny Winter Day

After being inspired by Steve's pictures form the other day, I visited a near by brook too. Steve's snow looks much more fluffy though.

More Water, Again

Playing with water is fun!
